Yoga and Astrology Connection: The Cosmic Correlation

Yoga and astrology are two ancient knowledge systems which are still relevant in the modern society and both serve as a way to self-enlightenment. Yoga is commonly associated with the improvement of the physical fitness and mental awareness, whereas astrology provides a map of how the heavens will affect one’s life. On the first glance, these two subjects may not have much in common, but when looked at from a certain angle, one will see that their connection can be very beneficial.

By combining these practices, we gain insights into ourselves and the world around us. As explained in BetterYoga, astrology and yoga can work together to enhance self-awareness and personal growth” source. Join me in this article as I explain how astrology and yoga can be combined and how I have been able to balance both of them.

The Origins of Yoga and Astrology

The yoga and astrology connection can be traced back to the earliest spiritual philosophies of the Indian culture. Vedic scripts which are the oldest known scripts contain knowledge on everything from creation to human beings. These teachings are in light of Sustenance and had a lot of emphasis on the wholeness of life. Although yoga and astrology differ in the approach they share the same fundamental concepts which is Vedic astrology.

  • Yoga is a discipline that enables people to balance psychologically, somatically, and spiritually. It comprises of stretching, breathing techniques and mental training.

The Philosophy of Energy in Yoga and Astrology

Thus, the two main concepts that are common for both yoga and astrology are the concept of energy. In yoga, this energy is called prana that is the energy that is believed to run through the entire human body. This energy is thought to be critical to health, energy, and total wellbeing given that it is essential for good health. It is supposed that it circulates through certain organs in the body called chakras, where each of them is related to certain type of existence, which may be stability, love or creativity, for example.

In astrology, the planets and the zodiac signs are believed to govern certain aspects of one’s life. For instance Venus is linked with love and beauty while Mars is linked with energy and actions. There are many people who believe that the energy of yoga can be combined with the astrological influences and thus come up with the right balance between the physical and the spiritual.

How Yoga and Astrology Can Work Together

There are several ways that the yoga and astrology connection can be combined:

    • Applying the Principles of Yoga: According to Your Zodiac Sign: The type of yoga poses or practices that can be useful for you may vary depending on the zodiac sign that you belong to. For instance if you are an Aries, a very energetic and fiery sign, you will need more balancing poses such as Child Pose or Tree Pose. For instance if you are a Cancer, an extremely emotional sign of the zodiac, you may choose to perform heart-opening poses such as Camel Pose or Bridge Pose in order to address your feelings.
    • Changing Your Practice according to the Phases of the Moon: It is widely thought that the moon has a profound impact on our feelings and mood. In the new moon phase, which is a time of new beginnings and goal setting, you may want to go for more vigorous poses such as Sun Salutations. At the full moon when it is claimed that people’s feelings are amplified you might want to do more passive poses for instance Legs up the Wall or Reclining Bound Angle Pose to experience relaxation.
    • Astrology in Meditation and Mantras: It is possible to use astrology as a means to determine which mantra or which breathing exercise would be most appropriate for the given astrological conditions. For instance at waxing moon (the period in which the moon increases), a person may use a mantra, for instance ‘Om Chandraya Namah’ that is associated with healing of the feelings and inner peace.

Astrology and Yoga: Synchronization to Individual Development

The yoga and astrology connection is deeply rooted and is based on experiences and beliefs than scientific evidence directly linking the two practices together. Many individuals find that astrology enhances their awareness of emotions and energy levels when practicing yoga. Personally I have found astrology to be a guide in determining when to relax and when to challenge myself during my workouts integrating the relationship, between yoga and astrology into my routine.

My Experience in Yoga and Astrology: A Personal Narrative

The initial time I embarked on the journey of doing yoga, I only saw it as a means of stretching my muscles, stress relaxation, and menta. But I never took it seriously, I would sometimes read my horoscope just for fun, but I don’t think the two had anything to do with each other. This all changed, however, when I went through a difficult time and consequently turned to astrology in a bid to seek guidance.

A friend once explained to me Mercury retrograde which is a time when the planet Mercury is believed to cause issues with communication and delays. I also noted that this could be the reason I felt so disoriented; I had not experienced such a situation before. I also wanted to work on my yoga to help me deal with the stresses in my life and so I tried to bring these energies into my practice. I chose some balancing poses like Warrior I and Tree Pose to help me build a strong and steady foundation.

Interestingly, it did! I also had one of those moments in a yoga session where I suddenly felt calm and harmonious as if I have found my balance again. This realization made me understand that yoga and astrology can be a great tool to self healing.

Currently, I apply astrology to my yoga routine since I think that the positions and planets have an impact on a person’s well-being. For instance:

  • During full moons when one is most likely to feel emotional I do more gentle restorative yoga to help me stay calm.
  • New moons are a perfect time to start new projects and I prefer more energizing flows that help me to feel energetic and powerful. This has been very useful in helping me to understand myself better and also have a better insight into the world we live in, so I encourage anyone who is interested to try it out and see how the stars and the yoga mat can bring harmony into one’s life.

Tips for Integrating Astrology into Your Yoga Practice

  • Track the Lunar Phases:

It is advisable to pay attention to the moon phase and make changes in your yoga workout schedule. For instance, one may decide to work on letting go and relaxing during the full moon and on beginning new habits during the new moon.

  • Tailor Your Poses to Your Zodiac Sign:

Find out what your zodiac sign means and how it affects your yoga on the mat. For instance, the Earth signs which include Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn may find more comfort in the grounding types of poses whereas the Fire signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius may like the more vigorous and energizing poses.

  • Use Astrology for Self-Reflection:

Astrology can be used in your yoga journaling to help you identify the effects of different astrological events to your practice. Write down which poses and at what time of the day are most effective given the current cosmic energy.

Conclusion: Searching for the Balance Between the Body and the Universe

The two most widely known forms of complimentary and alternative medicine are yoga and astrology and both of them can be integrated effectively. Thus, it is possible to improve your yoga routine, as well as gain more harmony in the course of the recognition of the cosmic flows that define our lives.

To be honest, I have learned a lot about myself and the world around me and thus, I am writing this article from a personal experience. So, why not give it a try? See how your star and your yoga mat can lead you to a happier life and I also hope that you have a deeper understanding of the Yoga and Astrology connection that’s around you on a personal level.
